Primary research is when the research is done by you. This may be through conducting surveys, or gathering information from people in an interview type process.
Secondary research is when the information is taken from surveys or questionnaires that have already been carried out. this information is available to the public and is referred to as 'desk research'. These are often found on the internet or in libraries. I have used primary research in my coursework recently, more specifically in my Ident research. I used an online survey type questionnaire to get various different opinions on how my Ident looked so i could act on their feedback. I've also used a small focus group to talk to a few students and really get the know what they thought of my Ident in a one to one situation. I found both of these methods of primary research useful and successful. I have also used Secondary research in my coursework recently to get information from the internet about a film i was analysing. I found that the internet was a convenient, broad place to look for good, reliable information to use in my work. For each method of research there are Pro's and Con's. Pro's of primary research
Con's of primary research
Pro's of secondary research
Con's of secondary research
I found that after using both methods of research, that I prefer to use primary research as it is up to date and you can get the exact answers your asking for. also if your struggling to find relative surveys online, it can actually be a quicker process.

Research is carried out in every aspect of media. If it's radio, film, tv, advertising or any other sector of the media industry, research will be carried out for many different reasons.here are some examples of why research is used.
Radio
Film
Television
These are just some of the main areas that would be researched into by companies so they can get the most views, get the best ratings and appeal to larger audiences. But overall, research is done to allow you to maximise profit, that is the end goal and the reason people/ businesses will do research. The genre for Shawshank redemption is a Crime Drama. This crime genre is obvious due to the prison environment and the reason for the film is because of the main character being accused of committing murder. Putting this film into the Drama genre can be justified by many different reasons.
First of all, the film has very rich depth to it because of its deep historical focus and how history is presented in the film. The film overall is very dramatic in all of its scenes which is what puts it in the Drama genre. But also the fact that there are no comedic elements to the film, other than a couple of funny lines here and there but nothing that emphasises enough to make the film worthy of being a comedy drama, the humour can often be portrayed as bullying in the film, but on the other hand it can also be light humour between a small group of inmates just joking about a situation but it quickly changes back to deep drama when scenes get a bit too humorous. The film definitely has realism in it. Being set in the 1940’s, the film really shows a lot about how society was back in that time which really makes the film that much more interesting and gives it lots of meaning. Compared to another prison based film such as The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption really enlightens you on how society was way back then. Whereas The Green Mile focuses less on historical elements and more on the fantasy elements of this inmate having the magic touch and being able to heal people. These films both have the same kind of themes to them but are very different in how time is represented which overall impacts the genre that they fall under. |
