The genre for Shawshank redemption is a Crime Drama. This crime genre is obvious due to the prison environment and the reason for the film is because of the main character being accused of committing murder. Putting this film into the Drama genre can be justified by many different reasons.
First of all, the film has very rich depth to it because of its deep historical focus and how history is presented in the film. The film overall is very dramatic in all of its scenes which is what puts it in the Drama genre. But also the fact that there are no comedic elements to the film, other than a couple of funny lines here and there but nothing that emphasises enough to make the film worthy of being a comedy drama, the humour can often be portrayed as bullying in the film, but on the other hand it can also be light humour between a small group of inmates just joking about a situation but it quickly changes back to deep drama when scenes get a bit too humorous. The film definitely has realism in it. Being set in the 1940’s, the film really shows a lot about how society was back in that time which really makes the film that much more interesting and gives it lots of meaning. Compared to another prison based film such as The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption really enlightens you on how society was way back then. Whereas The Green Mile focuses less on historical elements and more on the fantasy elements of this inmate having the magic touch and being able to heal people. These films both have the same kind of themes to them but are very different in how time is represented which overall impacts the genre that they fall under.
